چکیده
Figure 6 illustrates the simplified RBE model (equation 3) used in this work. Figure 6a shows 9 the physical dose di for 10 9 protons for a single pencil beam, delivering approximately 4.5 10 Gy at the Bragg peak, which is located at the distal edge of the target volume. Figure 6b 11 shows the additional biological dose c L̄idi in Gy for c = 0.04 μm/keV. The sum of c L̄idi and 12 di yields the RBE-weighted dose in Figure 6c. The RBE (Figure 6d) is the ratio of RBE13 weighted dose and physical dose, which becomes ill-defined where the dose goes to zero. For 14 our model, RBE essentially represents dose-averaged LET. For c = 0.04 μm/keV, c L̄idi adds 15 another 1.5 Gy to the physical dose near the Bragg peak, resulting in an RBE of approximately 16 1.3. In the falloff region distal to the Bragg peak the RBE increases to values around 1.5 to 1.6. 17

Robust Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) Increases Estimated Clinical Benefit in Head and Neck Cancer Patients
PURPOSE To compare the clinical benefit of robust optimized Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (minimax IMPT) with current photon Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and PTV-based IMPT for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. The clinical benefit is quantified in terms of both Normal Tissue Complication Probability (NTCP) and target coverage in the case of setup and range errors. MET...
متن کاملIntensity modulated proton therapy versus uniform scanning proton therapy: Treatment planning study of the prostate cancer in patients with a unilateral metallic hip prosthesis
The purpose of this study is to compare the dosimetric results between the uniform scanning proton therapy (USPT) and intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) plans for the prostate cancer in patients with a unilateral metallic hip prosthesis. Five prostate cancer cases with left (n = 3) and right (n = 2) metallic hip prostheses were included in this retrospective study. For each case, the USP...
متن کاملIncorporating deliverable monitor unit constraints into spot intensity optimization in IMPT treatment planning
Purpose: This study is to investigate the feasibility and impact of incorporating deliverable monitor unit (MU) constraints into spot intensity optimization in intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) treatment planning. Methods: The current treatment planning system (TPS) for IMPT at our institution disregards the deliverable MU constraints in the spot intensity optimization (SIO) routine. It...
متن کاملBeam configuration selection for robust intensity-modulated proton therapy in cervical cancer using Pareto front comparison.
The Pareto front reflects the optimal trade-offs between conflicting objectives and can be used to quantify the effect of different beam configurations on plan robustness and dose-volume histogram parameters. Therefore, our aim was to develop and implement a method to automatically approach the Pareto front in robust intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) planning. Additionally, clinically r...
متن کاملMulti-scenario based robust intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) plans can account for set-up errors more effectively in terms of normal tissue sparing than planning target volume (PTV) based intensity-modulated photon plans in the head and neck region
BACKGROUND In a previous report, we compared the conformity of robust intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) plans with that of helical tomotherapy plans for re-irradiations of head and neck carcinomas using a fixed set-up error of 2 mm. Here, we varied the maximum set-up errors between 0 and 5 mm and compared the robust IMPT-plans with planning target volume (PTV) based intensity-modulated ...
